The Sacred Lakes & Helambu Adventure
Duration: 12 Days / 11 Nights Maximum Altitude: 4,610 m / 15,124 ft (Lauribina Pass) · optional 5,145 m / 16,883 ft (Surya Peak) Grade: Moderate to Challenging Best Seasons: Spring (March–May) & Autumn (September–November) The Kathmandu–Dhunche road is open again, so this classic journey runs on its traditional southern gateway: drive to Dhunche (1,960 m), the gateway of the Langtang region, and trek into the hills through the traditional Tamang villages of Thulo Syabru and Sing Gompa (Chandanbari) — with its famous monastery and yak-cheese factory — climbing gradually through rhododendron and pine forests to the sacred alpine lakes of Gosaikunda (4,380 m), revered by Hindus and Buddhists alike. At the lakes you get a full rest and acclimatization day — sleep in, wander between the sacred kundas, or join the optional early-morning climb of Surya Peak (5,145 m) for a 360° sunrise panorama stretching from Ganesh Himal and Langtang Lirung all the way to the Annapurnas on crystal-clear days. From the lakes, cross the spectacular Lauribina Pass (4,610 m) — the trek's highest trail point — and descend through the rhododendron forests of Ghopte into the culturally rich Helambu region: Melamchi Gaon, Tarkeghyang, and Sermathang, with ancient monasteries and warm Hyolmo and Sherpa hospitality, before a gentle drive back to Kathmandu from Melamchi Bazaar. Only the Langtang Valley floor section remains on pause until the road beyond Dhunche is rebuilt — everything else, from the sacred lakes to the Helambu ridge, is fully open.

Trip Map

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Early morning drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche (~117 km, 5–6 hrs) via Trishuli Bazaar on the Pasang Lhamu Highway — the road to Dhunche is confirmed open. Enjoy views of the Trishuli River gorge, terraced hillsides, and, on clear days, the Ganesh Himal range. Dhunche is the district headquarters of Rasuwa and the gateway to the Langtang region. Trek briefing with your guide in the evening. Overnight in lodge. Distance/Drive: ~117 km, 5–6 hrs
Begin trekking (5–6 hrs) through oak and rhododendron forest and scattered Tamang settlements such as Brabal, with wide views back toward the Trishuli valley and Ganesh Himal. Arrive in Thulo Syabru (2,250 m), a large traditional Tamang village on a ridge shoulder — stone houses, gompa, and apple orchards. Overnight in lodge. Walking: 5–6 hrs
Climb steadily (5–6 hrs) through dense forests of rhododendron, oak, and pine, watching for langur monkeys and, with luck, red pandas. The trail opens with views of Langtang Lirung and the Tibetan border peaks. Reach Sing Gompa (Chandanbari, 3,330 m) — visit its monastery and the famous yak-cheese factory. Overnight in lodge. Walking: 5–6 hrs
Trek above the tree line (3–4 hrs) via Cholang Pati as rhododendron and pine forest gives way to open ridge, with views widening toward Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, and the Tibetan border peaks. We overnight at Lauribina Phedi (≈3,910 m), just below the sacred lakes — splitting the climb into two gentle steps keeps each day's sleeping-altitude gain within safe acclimatization limits. Sunset over Ganesh Himal from the ridge. Overnight in lodge.
A short, scenic morning (2–3 hrs) over the ridge to the sacred lakes of Gosaikunda (4,380 m). Arrive by late morning, enjoy lunch at the lakes, then a relaxed acclimatization afternoon: explore Saraswati Kunda and Bhairab Kunda, visit the Shiva shrine and the rock cleft where Lord Shiva is said to have struck his trident to create the lake, and photograph prayer flags mirrored in still water before sunset over the kundas. Overnight in a basic lakeside lodge.
The highest and most rewarding trail day — at your chosen pace.
Standard route: climb past the upper kundas to the cairn-marked Lauribina Pass (4,610 m), the trek's high point, with breathtaking alpine scenery, then descend steeply through rocky terrain and rhododendron forest to Ghopte (3,530 m) — 6–7 hrs.
Optional summit add-on: start before dawn (~4:00 am) with your guide for the steep 2–3 hr climb of Surya Peak (5,145 m) directly above the lakes — on clear mornings the sunrise panorama sweeps from Ganesh Himal, Himal Chuli, Langtang Lirung and the Tibetan border peaks all the way to the Annapurna range, with the turquoise kundas shining far below — then rejoin the trail and cross the pass before midday weather builds, continuing to Ghopte. A demanding but unforgettable 9–10 hr day, for strong, well-acclimatized trekkers only. Bring a headlamp, warm layers, and gloves.
Traverse remote mountain trails (6–7 hrs) along forested ridges with beautiful viewpoints, passing streams and small herders' shelters as you enter the Helambu region. Arrive at Melamchi Gaon (Melamchi Ghyang, 2,530 m), a traditional Sherpa village with a beautiful gompa. Overnight in lodge.
- Walking: 6–7 hrs
A gentler day (4–5 hrs) through pine and rhododendron forest to Tarkeghyang (2,590 m) — visit its ancient monastery (one of the oldest in Helambu) and experience the unique Hyolmo culture of one of the region's most beautiful villages. Overnight in lodge.
- Walking: 4–5 hrs
Gentle ridge walking (4–5 hrs) with magnificent Himalayan views and visits to small chortens and mani walls along the way. Arrive in Sermathang (2,610 m), a pretty Hyolmo village. Farewell evening with your trekking crew. Overnight in lodge.
- Walking: 4–5 hrs
Final morning walk (3–4 hrs) down through terraced fields and villages to Melamchi Bazaar, where your vehicle awaits. Scenic drive back to Kathmandu (2–3 hrs) — this road is unaffected by the flood damage. Farewell dinner in the evening. Overnight in Kathmandu. Walking: 3–4 hrs | Drive: 2–3 hrs
Transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward flight. Time to say SEE YOU AGAIN… The tour ends on Day 12 with an airport transfer; your final hotel night (Day 11 in Kathmandu) is included.
