12Days

Overview

The Sacred Lakes & Helambu Adventure

Duration: 12 Days / 11 Nights

Maximum Altitude: 4,610 m / 15,124 ft (Lauribina Pass) · optional 5,145 m / 16,883 ft (Surya Peak)

Grade: Moderate to Challenging

Best Seasons: Spring (March–May) & Autumn (September–November)

The Kathmandu–Dhunche road is open again, so this classic journey runs on its traditional southern gateway: drive to Dhunche (1,960 m), the gateway of the Langtang region, and trek into the hills through the traditional Tamang villages of Thulo Syabru and Sing Gompa (Chandanbari) — with its famous monastery and yak-cheese factory — climbing gradually through rhododendron and pine forests to the sacred alpine lakes of Gosaikunda (4,380 m), revered by Hindus and Buddhists alike.

At the lakes you get a full rest and acclimatization day — sleep in, wander between the sacred kundas, or join the optional early-morning climb of Surya Peak (5,145 m) for a 360° sunrise panorama stretching from Ganesh Himal and Langtang Lirung all the way to the Annapurnas on crystal-clear days.

From the lakes, cross the spectacular Lauribina Pass (4,610 m) — the trek's highest trail point — and descend through the rhododendron forests of Ghopte into the culturally rich Helambu region: Melamchi Gaon, Tarkeghyang, and Sermathang, with ancient monasteries and warm Hyolmo and Sherpa hospitality, before a gentle drive back to Kathmandu from Melamchi Bazaar.

Only the Langtang Valley floor section remains on pause until the road beyond Dhunche is rebuilt — everything else, from the sacred lakes to the Helambu ridge, is fully open.

The highest and most rewarding day. Climb past Phedi to the cairn-marked Lauribina

A full day at the sacred lakes to rest and acclimatize before crossing the pass. Optional sunrise hike to Surya Peak (5,145 m): start around 4:30–5:00 am with your guide for a steep 2–3 hr climb to the summit directly above the lakes — on clear mornings the panorama sweeps from Ganesh Himal, Himal Chuli, Langtang Lirung and the Tibetan border peaks all the way to the Annapurna range, with the turquoise kundas shining far below. Descend to Gosaikunda for a late breakfast (round trip 4–5 hrs; bring a headlamp, warm layers, and gloves).

Not climbing? Enjoy a wonderfully lazy day: circle the lakes to Lauribina Kunda and Bhairab Kunda, visit the Shiva shrine and the rock cleft where Lord Shiva is said to have struck his trident to create the lake, photograph prayer flags mirrored in still water, and recover before the pass day. This extra acclimatization day at 4,380 m is why most of our groups now cross Lauribina feeling strong. Second overnight in a lakeside lodge.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Kathmandu–Dhunche road is open and fully usable. Only the stretch beyond Dhunche (toward Syabrubesi and Rasuwagadhi) is still under repair after the 2026 floods, so the classic approach through Dhunche → Thulo Syabru → Sing Gompa is the best available route. The Langtang Valley floor section (days via Lama Hotel and Kyanjin Gompa) is paused until that road reopens — everything else of the classic trek is intact.
Yes — as soon as the road beyond Dhunche reopens, we restore the complete 16-day Langtang–Gosaikunda–Helambu itinerary (or add the valley as an extension to this trek on request).
Surya Peak (5,145 m) is a walk-up viewpoint directly above Gosaikunda — a steep but non-technical 4–5 hr round trip, best done at sunrise. It is the finest panorama of the trek on clear days and a favorite with photographers. It is completely optional: the rest day at the lakes is equally rewarding without it. Tell your guide the night before if you'd like to go.
Yes — only if you attempt it. Standard high-altitude trekking policies cover listed altitudes: with Lauribina Pass (4,610 m) a 5,000 m policy suffices, but for the optional Surya Peak (5,145 m) your policy should cover trekking up to 5,500 m. Confirm your coverage before departure.
Strongly recommended and it is now standard on this itinerary: two of the trek's highest nights (Sing Gompa 3,330 m, Gosaikunda 4,380 m) come in quick succession, and a full day at 4,380 m before the 4,610 m pass is exactly what acclimatization guidance prescribes. It also gives you a weather buffer for the pass crossing.
Moderate to challenging. Daily walking ranges from 3–7 hours, with Lauribina Pass (4,610 m) crossed once on Day 7 and the optional Surya Peak adding a steep summit-hour climb on Day 6. Previous trekking experience is helpful but not essential for fit and active trekkers.
It is managed well on this route: the Dhunche approach gives a steady, classic ascent profile — four days at 1,960–3,330 m before the lakes — plus a full acclimatization day at 4,380 m before the pass. Stay hydrated, walk at a steady pace, and follow your guide's advice.
Local tea houses and lodges along the trail; rooms are generally twin-sharing with shared bathroom facilities at higher elevations (Gosaikunda and Ghopte are basic).
Spring (March–May, rhododendrons in bloom) and Autumn (September–November, clearest views — best odds for the Surya Peak panorama). Janai Purnima festival (August full moon) draws thousands of pilgrims to Gosaikunda — a special experience, but book early and expect monsoon trail conditions.
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance covering emergency medical treatment and helicopter evacuation is required — up to 5,000 m for the standard route, or up to 5,500 m if you plan the optional Surya Peak climb.
Yes, provided they are in good physical condition and prepared for consecutive days of hiking. Beginners can simply skip the Surya Peak option.
Most tea houses offer charging and Wi-Fi for an additional fee; availability is limited at Sing Gompa, Gosaikunda, and Ghopte.
We recommend NPR 30,000–50,000 for personal expenses (drinks, snacks, Wi-Fi, hot showers, charging, and tips).
