Dhampus Peak — also known as Thapa Peak (6,012m / 19,724ft) — is Nepal's easiest 6,000-metre summit and the perfect first Himalayan peak. Towering between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges above Jomsom, it is a non-technical snow ascent: no rock walls, no ladders, just a steady snow slope to one of the greatest viewpoints in the Himalaya — Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, Nilgiri and Tukuche Peak in a single panorama. Our 16-day itinerary approaches through the beautiful Mustang villages of Marpha and Yak Kharka, with full acclimatization, skills coaching at Base Camp, and a contingency day.
Highlights
- Nepal's easiest 6,000m summit — ideal FIRST peak, no technical climbing
- Stand between two 8,000ers: Dhaulagiri (8,167m) & Annapurna I (8,091m)
- Trek through Mustang: Marpha's apple orchards, Yak Kharka pastures, Muktinath temple
- Fly the famous Pokhara–Jomsom mountain flight
- Full training + contingency day included — beginner-friendly with expert support

Day-by-Day Itinerary
ACAP entry and NMA Dhampus Peak climbing permits arranged. Full personal gear check — rent or buy missing items in Thamel. Optional sightseeing. Pack duffels for the mountain.
Drive the scenic Prithvi Highway (6–7 hrs) or take the 25-minute flight to Pokhara on extra cost. Evening free on Phewa Lakeside — Annapurna and Machhapuchhre views at sunset.
Spectacular 20-minute flight through the Kali Gandaki gorge to Jomsom (or scenic 4WD drive if flying isn't possible). Gentle afternoon trek down to Marpha — famous whitewashed "apple capital" village of Mustang. Taste the legendary apple pie.
Climb from the valley floor through pine forest into high yak pastures beneath the Nilgiri massif. First real altitude gain — slow and steady with your guide.
Into the true alpine zone: cross grassy ridges and moraine to Base Camp beneath Dhampus Peak's broad snow slopes, with Dhaulagiri dominating the western sky. Afternoon rest at camp.
Acclimatization day that doubles as climbing school: crampon walking, ice-axe technique, rope-team travel and self-arrest — everything you need for this non-technical summit. Traditional Sherpa puja ceremony for blessing and safe passage. Hydrate, nap, early bed.
Alpine start (~2 AM). A long, steady snow ascent — no rock walls, no ladders — to the summit (6,012m / 19,724ft) for sunrise between two 8,000m giants: Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and Annapurna I (8,091m), plus Nilgiri and Tukuche Peak. Descend to Base Camp for a well-earned rest.
Spare summit day for weather or extra rest. If summited: sleep late, photograph the Dhaulagiri massif, celebrate with the crew. Your guide replans if a second attempt is needed.
Descend the moraine and ridges back to green pastures. Knees will feel it — poles help. Green valleys and thicker air feel wonderful after camp life.
Easy downhill morning back to lovely Marpha. Afternoon free — wander the whitewashed lanes, visit the monastery, sample apple juice, pie and brandy from the local orchards. Proper bed and hot shower tonight.
Full-day scenic overland journey down the Kali Gandaki gorge — the world's deepest valley, squeezed between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. Drive via Ghasa and Lete to Tatopani (optional dip in the famous natural hot springs), then on through Beni to Pokhara. Arrive by evening.
Sleep in — you've earned it. Optional sightseeing: boat on Phewa Lake, World Peace Pagoda, Davis Falls, or just massage and lakeside restaurants. Your guide is available for any help.
Return to Kathmandu by flight or tourist bus. Free evening in Thamel for souvenirs and rest.
Flex day protecting your international flight against mountain weather delays — use it for sightseeing (Bhaktapur, Patan), shopping, or pure rest. Evening farewell dinner and summit certificates.
Transfer to Tribhuvan Airport for your onward flight. Thank you for climbing with Hiking Friends Travel Nepal!
